Satellite heat shows hot spots that NASA’s VIIRS satellites saw in the last 24 hours, grouped into small squares about 11 km wide. Named fires are wildfires NASA’s Earth Observatory lists as still burning. US incidents are active fires reported to the National Interagency Fire Center, with size and how much is contained.
Satellites pass over a few times a day, and the data is copied to this page from time to time. The time of the newest detection is shown on the page.
Satellites also see crop burning, gas flares and volcanoes. They can miss fires under thick cloud or smoke, and small fires can be too small to see.
